My oldest has told me that I could be a tour guide of our area because I know a lot of places.  So during April, I’m going to share some of those local sights beginning with A and then ending with the letter Z.  I’ll be sharing these sights Monday through Saturday.  On Sundays, I’ll be continuing to share my Disney photos.

So where are these local sights?  They are mostly in the Dayton, Ohio area.  Some of them are in Columbus or the Cincinnati area.

The Carillon Historical Park is part of an organization called Dayton History.  Other places in organization are the Carillon Brewing Company, Hawthorn Hill (Orville’s mansion), The Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site, Patterson Homestead, the Old Courthouse, Memorial Hall, and the Archive Center.  I’ve provided links to the other sites except for the Archive Center.

Carillon Park was founded by Mrs. Deeds.  She was the husband of Edward Deeds.  He was the president of the National Cash Register (NCR) and then along with Charles Kettering helped find Delco.  Charles Kettering invented the self starter for cars.  He is also known for helping build the dams after the Great 1913 flood.

In 1942, Mrs. Deeds funded building the carillon known as the Deeds Carillon.  It was built as a memorial to the Deeds family.  At the time it was built. it had 23 bells engraved with the names of their family.  Now it has 57 bells and is the largest carillon in Ohio.

The historical park has historic buildings and exhibits about the history of Dayton from 1796 until now.  The 1905 Wright Flyer III is located there and is the only airplane listed as a National Historic Landmark.

My favorite part of the Carillon Historical Park is the carousel.  Instead of horses, you ride on Dayton innovations.  Click here of more information.

I could ramble on about Carillon Historical Park.  However, I’m going to allow some of my photos of the park do the talking.

  • National Museum of the United States Air Force

    04/17/2017

My oldest has told me something interesting. He believes I could be a tour guide of our area. I know a lot of places.  In April, I will share some local sights. I will start with sights beginning with A and end with those starting with Z.  I’ll be sharing these sights Monday through Saturday.  On Sundays, I’ll be continuing to share my Disney photos.

So where are these local sights?  They are mostly in the Dayton, Ohio area.  Some of them are in Columbus or the Cincinnati area.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force is free to visit. We often refer to it as the Air Force Museum.  It has been in existence since 1923 before the Air Force was even created.  However, it didn’t become a public museum until 1954.  It’s been in it’s current building since 1971.

The museum has over a million visitors a YEAR.  It’s one of the most visited tourist attractions in Ohio.

I had to plan the itinerary for my friend last July. The Air Force Museum was at the top of the list.  She really enjoyed seeing the museum.

So what can you see at the museum?  The answer is a little bit of everything dealing with flight.  There are over 360 different aircraft and missiles in the museum.  Plus other displays.  One of my favorite exhibits is the Wright Brothers mural made of tiles that depict events from their lives.

Last June, they opened their fourth building.  In the fourth building, they have retired Presidential planes.  We’ve been in the Air Force One where the body of President Kennedy was carried in 1963.  It was also where President Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as President.

It’s a must see if you are in the area.  And did I mention it is free?

Enjoy the photos from the Air Force Museum.

(These are a small portion of the photos I’ve taken there over the years.  I didn’t include the mural.  If you visit, you need to go find it yourself.)

One more thing, the Military Police do a bag check for EACH and EVERY person who comes into the museum.  It’s only been in the last few years they started doing that.  When I go, I usually just take a lanyard with my id and money and my camera.  So much easier.

Join me tomorrow for an underground wonderland an hour northeast of me.  It’s a place that the Imaginative One wanted to spend his 12th birthday.

    Have a magical day,

    Traci
