I heard a squeak coming from the living room. At first, it totally freaked me out, but then I realized it was just the dog’s toy. He was rubbing it all over the floor, having a blast with it. I guess it was kinda rash of me to rush in and snatch it from him.
Lots of String Cheese We eat breakfast in my classroom. After the students get their breakfast, we return the rest of the food back to the cafeteria. Sometimes, we put it in the fridge for later. When we went to clean up the fridge for the summer, we found lots of string cheese. I guess it wasn’t too popular.
At least it wasn’t a harp One of my students decided he wanted to play the cello. One of the paraprofessionals in my room would take him to the orchestra class. Except there was a day, the paraprofessional was absent. I got the duty of attending orchestra with my student. That was the day he was given the cello his mom had rented for the school year. We had to carry it through the school building back to my room. All I can think is thank goodness it was not a harp. The cello was already big. I could not imagine moving a much bigger harp through the building.
Crumpet I’ve never had a crumpet. I know they look similar to English muffins. That’s all I know about them.
I work with middle schoolers in special education. Let me tell you, some of my students walk into my room with anxiety. So, if we don’t kick off the day with a chill soft start, it’s a recipe for frustration all around. We really have no idea what morning they had—did they sleep well? Have they been up for a while before school? Did they grab a bite to eat, or are they relying on our breakfast? Was there some drama happening at home?
In my room, we start with a morning meeting, which provides a soft start for the day. Each year, it changes depending on the students’ needs.
Three years ago, my morning meeting looked totally different from last year’s morning meetings.
Calendar: Month, date, year, season (video for season)
Weather: Clothing
Either Jack Harmon: alphabet or counting videos
Snoop Doggy Dog’s Doggyland’s affirmations
The morning meetings took a long time because of my students’ needs. One student worked with a staff member using Velcroed pieces and a hands-on calendar. The other students worked on calendar sheets.
Last two years:
How do you feel today? Share your emotions and, if you feel comfortable, why you feel that way.
We briefly discussed the weather, season, and date. They understood those concepts enough that we didn’t need to spend a lot of time on them.
Then, we discussed the obscure holidays. National Day Calendar has a video about one of them. The only issue is they didn’t post the video for the day on time. It was posted an hour after we did the morning meeting. So, we watched the video from the last day.
Then, we went over the agenda for the day.
It was a chill way to kick off the day. The laid-back start let my students wrap up breakfast and tidy up. They got to share how they were feeling. Honestly, I didn’t feel all annoyed that they weren’t ready to dive into learning yet.
Before you start planning your morning meeting, you need to decide which would help your class more.
Discussing the weather, seasons, and date
Obscure holidays and celebrities’ birthdays
Social Emotional Learning topics – Those nonacademic skills students need but are not taught directly.
Luck of the Irish If you don’t rock green on St. Patrick’s Day, you’re gonna get pinched! Good luck telling students to chill on pinching each other. Thankfully, my crew this year didn’t buy into that!
Loose Change So, my wallet dropped change like crazy on Sunday! First, it happened at church, then later at Sam’s Club. I don’t usually carry a wallet. I thought I’d try it out at 50 to look a bit more classy. Before this, I was just using a piece of lanyard. Anyway, one of the coins at church decided to roll off far away from me. Luckily, a kind church member went and grabbed it for me.
My Dog When my dog wants to go out for a walk, he bounces around the living room. It’s like he is a crazy ball of energy. Meanwhile, Hubby is running after him with the harness, and Gaston totally thinks it’s all a game.
Gaston also loves to bounce around in the snow—it’s the funniest sight ever! He looks like Tigger when he is doing that.
I will get to adding photos from Day 1. They need to be edited before I can share them.
On the second day, we traveled to Mystic, Connecticut, to see the aquarium and eat at Mystic Pizza. Then we traveled to Newport, Rhode Island. We were hoping to see the mansions, but it was foggy and misting.
Our first order of business was to get breakfast and coffee. We ended up at a service area. The state property was next to the parking lot. I thought it would be a good place to get a selfie.
The flowers were from the hotel where we had stayed the night before.
I have a zoo, aquarium, or wildlife centerbucket list. Mystic Aquarium made state #22 for me.
Join me on Saturday for more photos on the Mystic Aquarium.
In the previous school where I taught, there was a huge USA flag in the hallway. I would do morning duty near that flag. It sat flat against the wall. When the announcements were playing over the loudspeaker, I would have any student who was in the hallway stop moving. They would turn towards that large flag, so they could recite the pledge.
When I think of a forum, I think of a meeting where people come together to share ideas. In my current school, I hold class meetings, which are a type of forum. The meetings are held after the school-wide announcements. We discuss the weather, famous people’s birthdays, national holidays, and our feelings. Okay, sometimes I ask other questions, then how are you feeling? It’s a way to build class community.
Did you know June 17th is National Eat Your Vegetables Day and National Cherry Tart Day?
Life is different at the Believe in the Magic household. I haven’t shared a meal plan for a while. Youngest does not live at our house during the week anymore. He lives with his godfather during the week and with us during the weekend. So I’m not cooking dinner for him. Oldest cooks only cooks for himself. I cook only for Hubby and myself.
Breakfasts:
Yogurt with granola – I got some Michelle’s Granola from Wegmans when I was on my EPIC trip.
Last week, I went on EPIC trip #11 with my friend. We decide where to go and have lots of adventures during the time we are gone. Last week, I drove up to her place in New York. We then drove to Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. I completed visiting all of the states in the Atlantic seaboard while on the trip. All of my answers are related to the trip.
When I am driving, I chew a lot of gum. It keeps my mind alert. I focus on something. This helps me concentrate on making sure I get to my destination safely.
My friend thought it was ridiculous. I kept sticking out my tongue when she was taking my photo. I did the same when I was taking selfies. Hey, you have to have a little fun. Most of those photos were deleted, or she didn’t even take them.
When I got home from the trip, my dog was so happy I was home. I got a nap. Immediately after getting up, he smiled and showed me all of his teeth. He knew we were going on a ride to get a Pup Cup. He was a happy dog. (He has learned how to give smiles to people. He’s not angry when he does it. It’s usually showing us he is happy, or he knows he has done something bad. One time, he stood by my mother-in-law’s bed, smiled and scared her as she woke up from her nap.)
