Donut Trail

My oldest has told me that I could be a tour guide of our area because I know a lot of places.  So during April, I’m going to share some of those local sights beginning with A and then ending with the letter Z.  I’ll be sharing these sights Monday through Saturday.  On Sundays, I’ll be continuing to share my Disney photos.

So where are these local sights?  They are mostly in the Dayton, Ohio area.  Some of them are in Columbus or the Cincinnati area.

The Carillon Historical Park is part of an organization called Dayton History.  Other places in organization are the Carillon Brewing Company, Hawthorn Hill (Orville’s mansion), The Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site, Patterson Homestead, the Old Courthouse, Memorial Hall, and the Archive Center.  I’ve provided links to the other sites except for the Archive Center.

Carillon Park was founded by Mrs. Deeds.  She was the husband of Edward Deeds.  He was the president of the National Cash Register (NCR) and then along with Charles Kettering helped find Delco.  Charles Kettering invented the self starter for cars.  He is also known for helping build the dams after the Great 1913 flood.

In 1942, Mrs. Deeds funded building the carillon known as the Deeds Carillon.  It was built as a memorial to the Deeds family.  At the time it was built. it had 23 bells engraved with the names of their family.  Now it has 57 bells and is the largest carillon in Ohio.

The historical park has historic buildings and exhibits about the history of Dayton from 1796 until now.  The 1905 Wright Flyer III is located there and is the only airplane listed as a National Historic Landmark.

My favorite part of the Carillon Historical Park is the carousel.  Instead of horses, you ride on Dayton innovations.  Click here of more information.

I could ramble on about Carillon Historical Park.  However, I’m going to allow some of my photos of the park do the talking.
